Luke 6:6-11

Luke 6:6–11 (ESV): On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
People say, ‘Claim this gift; claim healing.’ You cannot claim healing. The Apostle himself claimed healing three times and did not get it. Never claim; never even use the word. We are to submit ourselves—it is the Spirit who gives.

Talk about my junior year wrestling ring worm story.
i felt unclean
i felt useless
unwanted
i felt no good, separated from everyone else.
Have you ever been there, hiding something from others?
lets get deeper, spiritual. Have you ever kept something from God? hidden away so others didn't know about?
-Lets read scripture.
Luke 6:6–7 (ESV)
On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him.

On another Sabbath,

Luke states this was done on another sabbath, so essentially a week later, while Matthew and Mark almost makes it seem like it happened right after the previous passages event (vv. 1-5).
amazing note here, Jesus, once again on the sabbath, is going to the synagogue.
Up to this point he has been to the synagogue every sabbath aside from when he went with his parents to Egypt, so this is significant.
If the messiah, our Lord, Jesus Christ, the incarnate word of God, made it to church every sabbath that he was able, how important is it for us to make it to church? Expound on this. (Jn 1:1 ; Jn 1:14
John 1:1 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
I am not going go to touch on this too long, rather I would say go and pray on it, seek God.
The “us four no more” way is nice, keep it close, but we should be feeling these seats with eager people waiting to hear what God has for them.
Luke 6:6–7 (ESV)
On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him.
WITHERED
Xeraino: greek word for withered but means dry or dried up.
Root word of Xeraino, Xeros.
Xeros: greek word for withered, means paralyzed.
Luke also makes sure to mention it was his right hand, the only gospel to do so.

right hand

This is very significant to the passage. Yes, Luke could simply be saying that it was his right hand because he was a physician, however, I believe the holy spirit had a bigger idea for this entry.
In that time the right hand was known for power, dominance, it was the bread winner the money maker. We hear it all the time in terms of Hierarchy, “my right hand man...”
Psalm 110:1 ESV
The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Exodus 15:6 ESV
Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy.
Isaiah 41:10 ESV
fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
The Hebrew word for right -Ya-min- means power, regarded highly, significant.
The right hand back in those times was also considered the clean hand, you used in society to greet people with. while the left had was considered the unclean hand. It was the hand that was used for other things related to going to the bathroom hence unclean.
Left -Semol- in Hebrew is powerless, unprofitable, unfortunate.
So by adding this i believe we can see that this man was battling not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. And Jesus knew this.
Luke 6:6–7 (ESV)
On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him.

watched

The root word Tereo: was to keep, keep watch or observe while...
paratereo meant to keep watch closely.
The pharisees and scribes were keeping a close watch on Jesus which probably meant they secretly planted the man with the withered hand there to try and catch Jesus. Set a trap.
Talk on this a bit.
Jim Bob analogy/story.
Luke 6:8–10 (ESV)
But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored.
“But he knew their thoughts...”, How did Luke know this? IDK, but he possibly doing to show the deity of our lord through this scripture.
The Pharisees, leaders in the jewish culture, in the jewish religion, had their hearts hardened, they were already angry with “this man” Jesus that they rather this man not be healed then to see a miracle happen.
There is no middle course. The man before him was leading an impaired life. To do nothing on the sabbath was to destroy life. Jesus came to save.
John 3:17 (ESV)
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
“Jesus will recognize no alternative to the doing of good except the doing of evil. The refusal to save life is tantamount to the taking of it”
These religious minded individuals, these legalistic people were so hardened and cold that they couldn't even begin to see beauty in jesus’ authority that was has taken place here.
There is nothing holier, or better, or safer, than to content ourselves with the authority of Christ alone.
John Calvin
  Authority of Jesus Christ
The right of Jesus Christ to speak and act on his Father’s behalf in forgiving sin, Healing, pronouncing judgment and promising eternal life to those who believe in him.
Jesus Christ’s authority underlines his divine status

Lets Look at The origin of Jesus Christ’s authority
It is given by God the Father

John 3:35 (ESV) — 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
See also Mt 28:18; Lk 10:22; Jn 5:26–27; Jn 7:16; Jn 10:18; Jn 12:49–50; Jn 17:2

It is limited by the Father
Mk 10:40

See also Mt 24:36; Php 2:6–8

Philippians 2:6–8 (ESV) — 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
It is questioned by others
Mt 12:24–28
Matthew 12:24–28 (ESV) — 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” 25 Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Mt 21:23–27; Jn 2:18
John 2:18 (ESV) — 18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”

Matthew 9:1–8 (ESV) — 1 And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. 2 And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” 3 And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” 4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 7 And he rose and went home. 8 When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
Luke 7:37–38 (ESV) — 37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.

I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.” 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”

He receives honour and glory

R.C. Sproul put it perfectly.
The authority of Christ and that of Scripture are one.
R. C. Sproul
This is Christs authority on display once again.
We saw it in verses 1-5 and now once again we see it here.
Nothing is done without Christ.
Remember, God is not mysterious to us - He is actually quite direct in most all ways in the New Testament

Christ speaks directly to each person

V.10 – he saw them all, but spoke to the individual
For a miracle to happen, the Lord needs to speak to our heart - to each of us. He is a very personal God. He will touch and reach us if we will humble ourselves before Him.

Christ gives basic Instructions

The word seek is used 260 times.
Hear 589 times.
Stand 329 times.
Pray Over 550 times
The word go is used 1610 times in the Bible.
It is not complicated, and the instructions for the man with the withered hand were simple as well - first the Lord said:

1. Rise Up

Rising up gives the idea of the giving ones attention to something - to be ready to receive and act upon the instruction given.
The first big and likely most common obstacle people face today in our generation about coming to Christ is being able to hear and listen to what God has for them - so the Lord says: RISE UP - and then:

2. Stand forth

Present and be counted - present yourself to God, allow Him to have control - put your faith in Him. This man didn’t know what the Lord wanted, but when the Lord called - He responded to that call.
If God is calling you to salvation, Then I’m listening and attentive.

3. Turn it over to me

Trust me with it, I won’t waste or misuse what is given to me.

Give it to God and let Him restore all

When the man gave the Lord the worst part of himself and God changed everything for him.
The teaching and application is clear.
One person gave God the worst thing about them- while the group of Pharisees refused to admit or show they had any error.
Notice He said stretch forth thy hand -
Jesus never told him which hand to stretch forth.
If someone before this told him to stretch forth his hand he would offer his good hand.
But he knew to offer to Christ, his bad hand.
It is because, God wants to take the that which is defile, that which is rejected, that which is sinful, that which is hurtful and make it to something that is wonderful.

1. God wants your painful things

2. God wants the things you don’t want to let go of

Your protected things
Your private things
Things that you are embarrassed of
The past

3. God wants the things that have withered away

Your Joy may be withered
Your purpose is withered
Your heart may be withered
As the Psalmist said in:
Psalm 102:11 ESV
My days are like an evening shadow; I wither away like grass.
My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass.
But -
Psalm 102:12–13 ESV
But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations. You will arise and have pity on Zion; it is the time to favor her; the appointed time has come.

4. The prideful things

God only gives grace to the humble.

5. God wants the things that you have hidden from the world that are not hidden to Him

6. God wants to do something for us that cannot be done otherwise because he is the only one who can.

You’ve been doing things with your “good” hand too long and hiding the other.
One person went away restored and whole while the group of Pharisees departed more wretched than ever.
